Practice & Theory:

Reframing Interdisciplinary Scholarship & Teaching

2017 AGLSP Annual Conference

October 19 – 22, 2017; Raleigh NC
Hosted by North Carolina State University
Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program

North Carolina State University embraces the land grant ideal of applying knowledge to tackle society’s grand challenges. The university’s motto, “Think and do,” exemplifies this tradition of research and pedagogy in the public service, and for the benefit of humanity.  In recent years, the field of Graduate Liberal Studies has also taken a pragmatic turn, toward a wide range of interdisciplinary endeavors, including community activism, conflict resolution and mediation, social entrepreneurship, sustainability, service learning, travel study, digital humanities, and public history.

Recasting “theory and practice” as “practice and theory,” our conference theme aims to foreground practical applications, without losing sight of their theoretical underpinnings. In this spirit, we invite papers across a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary inquiry and engagement, from hands-on initiatives, to theoretical perspectives, to the vital tensions and connections between practice and theory. Engage in lively discussions as we honor the rich heritage of Graduate Liberal Studies, while considering how to reframe our scholarship and teaching for the twenty-first century.

Join us in the heart of North Carolina’s Research Triangle region – home to major universities, international corporations, and world-class medical centers – with its unique blend of higher education, high tech, and old-fashioned Southern hospitality. Staying in downtown Raleigh, you’ll be just steps away from museums, historic sites, performing arts venues, and a vibrant restaurant scene.

Conference Details, Call for Papers and more will be updated in early 2017. Stay tuned!
